Permanent position. Full Time Monday to Friday 40 hours

Salary: from £46,000 pa dependant on qualification and experience.

Job Description

A certificated RPA/RWA/MPE is required to work independently to give advice and guidance about the possible hazards of ionising radiation, such as x-rays, as well as radioactive materials and waste. An RPA/RWA will advise the clients on any legal requirements, regulations and best practice relating to radiation protection and the use and disposal of radioactive material in their particular professional field, as well as making recommendations on the design of facilities and projects and safety training. An RPA/RWA is able to make appropriate use of scientific techniques and equipment to measure and monitor radiation, assess risks and ensure the safety of the workplace, patients, the general public and the environment.

In this role, radiation protection and radioactive substances advice will cover non-nuclear industries only, including areas such as:

  • industry (various commercial types)
  • dental
  • veterinary
  • research (private companies/laboratories/universities)
  • teaching
  • contamination

As a certificated RPA/RWA/MPE you will be typically involved in the work activities listed below:

  • Visiting clients to provide radiation protection consultancy and writing reports based on these visits. These visits will include:
    • developing and reviewing radiation protection systems and inspecting their operation.
    • assessing and maintaining records of radiological and environmental conditions.
    • liaising with management and the workforce (including plant managers, designers, engineers, laboratory staff, academics, and other health and safety professionals) on matters of radiation safety and legislation.
    • auditing dosimetry results
    • assessing ionising radiation risks in the workplace and advising on the design of plant, equipment and waste disposal to ensure compliance with current legislation.
    • Monitoring equipment and facilities. (doses to patients, operators and site contamination levels).
  • Providing telephone and email responses on a range of radiation protection issues across our varied client base.
  • Drawing up and implementing radiation protection policies and procedures including the constructing of Prior Risk Assessments.
  • Assessing the impact of releasing radioactive material on the environment.
  • Advising on the safe transport of radioactive materials.
  • Preparing emergency plans for responding to radiation incidents.
  • Leading and coordinating enquiries into accidents or incidents.
  • Liaising with inspectorate and other bodies.
  • Identifying training needs, advising clients and where requested delivering bespoke and standard training.
  • Producing power points, relevant course information and delivering various radiation protection courses.

After a probationary period, internally you will join the certificated team in their roles as Tactical trainers.

  • This will involve regular mentoring and 1-2-1 sessions with Trainee RPAs in line with the SGA RPA/RWA Training Regime.
  • Conducting offsite training through shadowing visits.

As a certificated RPA/RWA/MPE you will be expected to keep up to date with changes in legislation and professional guidance to be able to disseminate this information, relevant to each speciality, to all the clients of SGA.

There will be a requirement to take additional courses/ study days to further your knowledge and complete your CPD requirements towards the 5 yearly re-certification.

  • Someone with a proven track record as an RPA/RWA/MPE and a current certification from RPA2000.

Must have a full UK driving licence
