The role of the RPA is to provide advice about the protection of employees, the public and the environment from harmful effects of ionising radiation as dictated by current legislation.
We offer a choice of contract terms:
1 – RPA Services only
SGA will provide Radiation Protection Advice for Engineers on their compliance with IRR17 by:
- undertaking an annual review to assess and audit relevant management arrangements, documentation and procedures relating to the installation of x-ray equipment.
- assessing the requirements for compliance with current legislation and providing advice and assistance (verbal, email and documentary) regarding, where relevant:
- obtaining notification/registration and/or consent from the HSE
- radiation risk assessment
- designation of areas
- radiation protection documentation
- local rules and contingency planning
- training requirements
- other relevant aspects – including quality assurance programmes, dosimetry, appropriate monitoring, personal protective equipment and the investigation of incidents.
- issuing a comprehensive report with relevant recommendations and action points.
- providing 24-hour on call emergency availability.
- provide updates on legislative changes and other relevant information.
2 – RPA Services and Work Together Agreements
In addition to the above SGA can produce Critical Examinations (and Acceptance Tests) reports based on the information / measurements collected by an Engineer.
The installer must consult an RPA under IRR17 Reg 32 (2) with regard to the nature and extent of any Critical Examination and the results of that examination. If the source of ionising radiation is to be used for medical purposes ‘Acceptance Testing’ is additionally required with consultation from an MPE. CE / CEATs should be performed following the installation / re-installation / major change of components (e.g. new tube head or timer control) of the equipment.

Training
As a maintenance engineer and installer of x-ray units, engineers are likely to be working as their own ‘Radiation Protection Supervisor’ and therefore are required, for compliance with IRR17, to be adequately and appropriately trained. See our Training page for RPS course details.
