The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 place a duty on employers to ensure the health and safety of employees and others affected by their work. More specifically, the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 mandates risk assessments for optical radiation hazards, including lasers.
An employer appointing a ‘competent person’ such as an LPA (Laser Protection Adviser), is often the most practical way to demonstrate compliance, particularly in high-risk environments (Class 3B and 4 lasers). In addition, regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issue guidance, which strongly recommends the appointment of a Laser Protection Adviser to ensure safe working practices and provide specialist expertise in laser safety.
Following appointment as your LPA, SGA will work with you face-to-face to assess the risks involved with laser use at your workplace and provide high quality service and advice, helping to ensure that ‘best practice’ in laser safety is established.
Our LPA Services include:
- site assessment visit, providing Risk Assessment, Local Rules and a comprehensive report.
- reviewing existing Laser Protection Documentation and providing advice
- updates on legislation and guidance note changes
- advice on laser safety for the design and construction of new (and modifications to existing) buildings
- access to laser protection advice for any queries or issues
