Any employer engaged in work with ionising radiation must appoint a suitable Radiation Protection Adviser. The appointed RPA must have the required knowledge and experience relating to the employer’s area of work.

So, what does ‘work with ionising radiation’ mean?

The HSE Work with Ionising Radiation (IRR17) Approved Code of Practice and Guidance states that work with ionising radiation means:

  • the production, processing, handling, disposal use, storage, holding or transport of radioactive substances;
  • the operation of electrical equipment emitting ionising radiation and containing components operating at energies above 5kV;
  • work in places where the annual average radon 222 gas concentration in air exceeds 300Bqm³.
