Veterinary

Veterinary Practices using any source of ionising radiation (i.e. – x-ray) are required to appoint a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) and if using radioactive isotopes, a Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA) must also be appointed. SGA can act in both these capacities for you.

SGA provide advice to veterinary practices with x-ray equipment under the provisions of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and, if using radioactive isotopes, the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 (with 2018 amendment).  The advice will also cover requirements and good practice contained in other relevant legislation and professional body recommendations (e.g. BVA).

Our service is a working partnership with our clients and includes:

  • a site visit by one of our technical team
  • an audit of radiation protection documentation
  • a full assessment of the x-ray unit(s) and areas of use
  • a dose rate survey
  • provision of a comprehensive report with advice and action points for improved compliance
  • Access to radiation protection advice for any queries or issues throughout the term of your contract
  • an annual appointment certificate
  • 24-hour on call emergency availability
  • updates on relevant legislative changes

Additional Services:

In addition to RPA / RWA services, SGA can undertake:

  • Inspections of Plans
Thinking of installing a new unit or setting up a new practice? Under IRR17 Schedule 4: Regulation 14 an RPA must be consulted to undertake a prior examination of plans. SGA can provide a Plans Report detailing recommendations for keeping doses As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and advice on shielding requirements to ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Critical Examination (CE)
A Critical Examination (CE) is only required when a unit is first installed or a major component e.g., a timer or a tube head is replaced. This is usually carried out by the installing engineer or, if required, SGA can carry this out for you.
  • Permit Applications / BAT Assessments
For practices using radioactive isotopes, as your appointed RWA, SGA can provide advice on permit application, variation or surrender; produce environmental impact assessments and Best Available Techniques (BAT) assessments.
  • Laser Protection Advice
Do you use a Class 3B/R or Class 4 laser?  Are you compliant?  SGA can work with you to ensure robust and safe working practices are in place, ensuring compliance with current regulations. See our Laser Protection Advice page for further information.
